This explosion of colour is hand painted on bark paper by the Nahua people of Southern Mexico.
Amate bark paper is made from the shedding bark of the Amate tree (Ficus species).
The bark paper has a lovely silky quality and it also has depth, you can see the layers of bark that have been pounded down in the paper making process
Painting on bark paper is an ancient tradition in Mexico that has been part of their culture since the Aztec era.
